Between April and the end of October St George’s Church is open to visit on Saturdays 11-3 pm, and during exhibitions, events and workshops. The key is available for visits at other times. There are also four services during the year in this redundant but not deconsecrated church (please scroll to bottom of page for more details).

Winter Jazz
Jake Fryer & his quartet
Jake Fryer: alto Sax, Rodney Mendoza: piano, Richard Saddler: double bass, Jonathon Sargent: drums
Jake has performed at Ronnie Scott’s as part of the Brit Festival and, as well as being ‘the Four Tops’ lead alto sax, he has played with Malene Mortenson for the London Jazz Festival. He has performed at the Institute of Fine Arts at the Birmingham International Jazz Festival and headlined at the Duc des Lombards Jazz Club (Paris) and FCCJ Club (Tokyo).
This afternoon Jake and his quartet will cheer the wintry season with classic swinging standards from Cole Porter to Gershwin. Tea and cake provided!

Young Performers: Auditions for the first Music Matters concert
‘Music Matters’ is a new scheme, sponsored by Waitrose together with John Lewis Partnership, to give young instrumentalists and singers the experience of performing in front of an audience. This audition is open to children from Surrey, aged 5 – 16, and those chosen will take part in the first Music Matters concert on 20th May. All Western classically trained instrumentalists and singers can apply, and we also welcome classically trained musicians from other parts of the world.

Dance Signatures Exhibition and residency by Richenda Court
This exciting project will follow our 2012 artist in residence Richenda Court as she explores the relationship between art and dance.
Richenda, who studied both fine art and dance at Brighton University, will be inviting dancers into St George’s Church, running workshops for local secondary schools, and using the residency to push her own work into a new dimension. Her studio will be open to the public each Friday, and here you are welcome to watch her work progressing, and even take part yourself.

A concert by the best of Surrey’s young instrumentalists and singers
A delightful afternoon of favourite light classical music and song, performed by children aged 5 –16. This is a family event, and children are welcome to attend.

Modern Madonnas
An exhibition celebrating the ‘mother and child’ relationship.
The Madonna theme seems an appropriate subject for a church, and this exhibition, by groundbreaking artists chosen from Surrey and the South East, will offer a fresh, contemporary interpretation of the mother and child theme. The exhibition will include painting, sculpture and installation art, and incorporates three related art workshops.

Music Matters: Piano Workshop with Eva Doroszkowska
Young Surrey pianists (aged 5 – 16) are invited to spend an enjoyable afternoon taking part in Eva’s inspiring Workshop.
Eva is an enthusiastic and inspiring musician with a vital energy, who is passionate about sharing her love of music. She is an international concert pianist, has over 20 years of experience working with young musicians and has taught piano at the Junior Royal Academy for over 10 years
‘We all learn from the experience of performing a piece. Having another set of ears to listen and to work actively in the friendly atmosphere of a master class or workshop can prove to be a valuable and rewarding exercise.’ (Suzuki)

Festival of British Archaeology
‘Church Architecture and Heritage’ An Exhibition by the Royal Photographic Society
St George’s Church is proud to be, once again, part of the Archaeology Festival. This year, we will be displaying photographs depicting churches, including their architecture, archaeology and artefacts, from Saxon times to the C20th.
Photography fulfils an important role in archaeology by providing a detailed record should the originals need reconstruction after damage.
This exhibition by the Archaeology and Heritage Group of the Royal Photographic Society also offers an aesthetic response, capturing the unique atmosphere of our historical heritage.

Autumn Concert
The Acstede String Quartet

Acstede is the old name for Oxted in Surrey, where the quartet gave their first performance in 2004. Tonight they will be performing music with an English connection, ranging from the classical string repertoire, to lighter arrangements of popular tunes, spanning the C17th to modern times.
